Kristi Avalos will present this topic at the 2024 AIA Conference on Architecture in Washington, D.C.
“Designing for Accessibility, Community Impact, and Beauty” – Topic Overview:
Access often appears to be an afterthought to fulfill the letter of the law. However, when
accessibility is intentionally in the plans, the design can be functional, accessible, and beautiful!
This impacts communities in significant ways. For the rapidly growing population of seniors and
people with disabilities, accessibility opens doors and experiences that previously were closed
to them. At the same time, it significantly increases the number of customers for businesses that
make it abundantly clear they welcome this group by making their services easy for them to
access.
Information will be shared regarding innovative strategies in design projects that create access
solutions which exceed minimum standards without adding additional costs. Where greater
access is achievable, complaints and lawsuits are averted, positive publicity is generated, and
communities are changed for the better through the many new opportunities opened to people
