Regulations, and standards, and laws, oh my! Self-evaluations and transition plans are a daunting concept for anyone responsible for complying with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Compliance with this important law opens significant funding opportunities while greatly reducing the likelihood of access-related complaints and litigation. But even seasoned county leadership find themselves struggling to sift through the layers of planning, funding, data collection, and more when it comes to developing effective self-evaluations and transition plans. Kristi Avalos, who has 40+ years of accessibility experience, has the ability to sift through the vast confusion as she shares answers to the hardest questions:

  • What’s the difference between a self-evaluation and a transition plan?

  • Do I need a transition plan if I have a self-evaluation?

  • How often should self-evaluations or transition plans be updated?

  • What does the Department of Justice look for in these documents?

Whether your city has kept their documents up-to-date since the DOJ’s 1992 deadline or you’re surprised to learn the deadline passed almost 29 years ago as you scramble to compile this information for the first time, this session provides technical guidance for ADA compliance and useful strategies for conducting self-evaluations and transition plans at all stages.

Learning outcomes:

  1. Upon completion, participants will have an understanding of the ADA requirements for Title II entities.

  2. Upon completion, participants will know how to prevent government funding from being at risk and be able to avoid access-related litigation.

  3. Upon completion, participants will know steps to develop a compliant ADA Transition Plan. including these key topics:

  • An optional interim step: The ADA Compliance Plan

  • Designating an ADA Coordinator

  • Conducting a Self-Evaluation

  • Data collection and integration

  • Funding, planning, and prioritizing a Transition Plan project

  • Identifying possible solutions in removing barriers to attain compliance in a cost-effective manner

  1. How to develop the internal team to complete the project.

After attending this instructive session, participants will be well equipped to create an ADA compliant Transition Plan that will ensure that individuals with disabilities are not excluded from their county’s programs, services and activities.
