29th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act

July 26, 2019, marked the 29th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, which was signed into law by President George H.W. Bush on July 26, 1990.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, including jobs, schools, transportation, and all public and private places open to the general public, was groundbreaking for people with disabilities. It also was groundbreaking for all Americans as it changed the way the country regarded disabilities and changed the way disabilities were defined.

29th Anniversary of the ADA

The anniversary of the ADA marks the extraordinary service that the ADA and the ADA Amendments Act of 2008 (ADAAA) provide individuals with disabilities as they give civil rights protections to this population similar to those provided to individuals on the basis of race, color, sex, national origin, age, and religion. The ADA and ADAAA also assure equal opportunity for people with disabilities to access business, employment, transportation, telecommunication, and state and local government programs and services.
